Od prvního června do prvního listopadu 2009 probíhá v Londýně výstava o Janu kaplickém v Muzeu designu.

“Jan Kaplický, who died earlier this year, was the Czech architect responsible for some of the most remarkable buildings that Britain has ever seen. Lord’s cricket ground holds the press box he built with his former partner, Amanda Levete – it was their first major project and won the Stirling Prize.

Kaplický also designed the Selfridges department store in Birmingham, 2003 and yet even more remarkable are the buildings that Kaplický designed, which the world will never see – to say nothing of his stream of ideas for solar powered vehicles, electric cars, jewellery, bikinis and double-decker buses. This exhibition will celebrate the work of a gifted architect and designer.”

“How tragic that architect Jan Kaplický should die on the streets of Prague within hours of the birth of his daughter. And within a few years of what would have been, and hopefully still will be, his greatest architectural achievement, the new national library in Prague.”

“He was still positive about the [Czech National] library. It isn’t on site but he was positive it would be. He particularly wanted Josef to see it finished. He couldn’t talk about one without talking about the other.

“Jan’s position in the hierachy of great architects is rivaled only by Zaha Hadid and Oscar Niemeyer. He was an architect for whom artists had immense respect – in some ways he was closer to the world of art than architecture. He was a proper, bone fide poet.

“He retained childlike enthusiasm for architectural discovery and in no way was he slowing down – quite the reverse.

“Architecture was his life. It was the oxygen that kept him alive. Without it, he was nothing.”
